FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions for Speakers
General Questions
Can I pause and resume my session?
Yes, without any problem. All your submitted recordings are permanently saved. You can close the browser, shut down the computer, and come back a week later — your recordings will still be there, and "Done" items retain their status.
Do I need to do everything at once?
No. 30-minute sessions are recommended. This protects your voice and maintains consistent quality. Regularity (30 min/day) is more effective than a long session.
Can I record from a smartphone?
Yes. The interface works on smartphones: - Option 1: Record directly via the mobile browser (Chrome Android recommended) - Option 2: Record with an audio recording app, then upload the file from the interface
Can I work offline?
For submitting recordings, no — an internet connection is required. But you can: - Record your audio with an external application offline - Upload them later when you are connected
Questions About Recordings
Does a submitted recording replace the old one immediately?
Yes. As soon as you click "Submit" and the success message appears, the new audio is active on the server. It will be served to new learners immediately.
Learners who have already downloaded the content offline will receive the new audio at their next internet connection.
What should I do if the text to record contains an error?
Do not record it as-is. Contact the administrator: - Specify the card (number), the position, and the incorrect text - Wait for the correction before recording
Recording incorrect text would make the app misleading for learners.
Do I need to record phrases in a specific order?
No. You can record positions 1 and 4 in any order. However, record both positions of the same card in succession for sonic consistency (same voice, same ambiance).
I can pronounce this word in two ways — which should I choose?
Choose: 1. The pronunciation most common in your region/community 2. The one you would use to teach a child 3. If in doubt, go with the standard pronunciation if one exists
If you are genuinely unsure, contact the administrator to clarify.
Can I record variants or alternative pronunciations?
No — the app only supports one recording per item. If you re-record, the old one is replaced.
If a variant is important, report it to the administrator for discussion about adding additional items.
Questions About the Interface
Why don't positions 2 and 3 of phrases appear?
Because these positions are in French — they do not require recording from you. The interface only shows you the positions you need to record.
Can I listen to my recordings after submitting them?
Yes. Click the 🔊 "Listen" button on any item marked "Done" to listen back to your recording.
Will users see my recordings immediately?
Yes. As soon as a recording is submitted successfully: 1. It is uploaded to MinIO 2. It is processed by FFmpeg (a few seconds) 3. It is available for all users
Questions About Privacy and Recognition
Will my name appear in the app?
Your name is displayed in your own speaker interface. For public display in the player app, this depends on the agreement with the project administrator — clarify this point before you begin.
Who can see my recordings?
Your audio recordings are public — they are accessible to all users of the app who have unlocked the corresponding language. They are stored in a MinIO bucket with public access.
Will I be compensated for my work?
This depends on your agreement with the Racines project administrator. Clarify this point before starting your recordings.
